PRINCE William and his wife, Catherine, have announced they are expecting a baby, ending days of speculation the 30-year-old duchess was pregnant.
The announcement came after Kate, 30, was taken late Monday afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in London where she is expected to remain for several days with severe morning sickness.
The condition is more often experienced by women expecting twins.
William, also 30, drove Kate to hospital after she fell ill while they had been staying at her parents' house in Berkshire, west of London.
The news was met with great joy from the royal households and the general public.
The couple put out a statement saying they were "delighted with the news".
The baby will be born third in line to the throne, thanks to laws changed last year in Britain, and it will be the first time in almost 120 years a serving monarch gets to meet a great grandchild born directly into succession to the crown.
Royal births are usually celebrated with a Royal Salute of 41 guns.
They are registered in the normal way, although the Home Secretary is required to notify certain officials including the Lord Mayor of London, while the Queen's Private Secretary Sir Christopher Geidt informs Governors Generaloverseas.
There is also the age old custom of attaching Notice of Royal births and deaths to the railings at Buckingham Palace for members of the public to read.
But as well as keeping to this tradition, the arrival of royal birth will no doubt also be officially declared via the monarchy's websites, on Facebook and via Twitter.
Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, said the news bookended a year that saw the royal family riding high in popular esteem after celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.
"We're riding on a royal high at the moment at the end of the Diamond Jubilee year," he said. "People enjoyed the royal romance last year and now there's this. It's just a good news story amid all the doom and gloom."
Speculation about when Wills and Kate would start a family has been intense since the royal wedding in 2011.
William's mother - the late Princess Diana - got pregnant just four months after her wedding in 1981.
Diana reportedly suffered from morning sickness for months and complained of constant media attention.
"The whole world is watching my stomach," Diana once said.

Unfaithful star Olivier Martinez got a brace on his right hand Tuesday, nursing injuries from his Thanksgiving Day fight with model Gabriel Aubry.
Halle Berry’s fiance was a professional boxer for three years in Europe and told Ocean Drive magazine, “I’ve always liked boxing because it’s hard, it’s violent, but it’s honest”
So, after seeing Gabriel’s bashed in face, we’ve got to ask — could Olivier’s hand be considered a “lethal weapon?”
We posed the question to LA Family Law Attorney Lisa Bloom, who says, “It’s a creative theory.”
But, the legal analyst for Avvo.com, adds, “I expect the courts will see this as a sad but common domestic violence incident. Everyone involved should be ordered into anger management and parenting classes, because no child should have to deal with out of control adults hurting each other.”

Gabriel Aubry spends time with his daughter Nahla after agreement

Gabriel Aubry enjoyed a happy reunion with daughter Nahla on Friday evening after calling a truce with her mother Halle Berry in court on Thursday.
It was the first time the father-daughter duo were able to spend quality time together since the 36-year-old model's arrest after a Thanksgiving altercation between the French-Canadian model and Berry's fiancé Olivier Martinez.
The model covered his purple shiner with a pair of sunglasses and attempted to go incognito in a black jacket over a grey hoodie, baseball hat and jeans.Despite his numerous injuries from last week's brawl, the blond stud seemed thrilled to take his girly girl's hand and happily lead her through the parking lot.
The little girl - dressed in striped tights and a classic trenchcoat - was equally thrilled, smiling and skipping by her doting dad's side as if she hadn't a care in the world.
Meanwhile, Berry also looked in better spirits on the rainy Friday as she brought Nahla to school - with a police escort in tow.
Martinez - still sporting bandages on his right hand - was also spotted Friday hitting up a local liquor store in Los Angeles.

And while a court hearing is still scheduled for December 13, the warring trio appear to have at least temporarily reached a peaceful conclusion.
Berry has allegedly agreed to pay all of the model's medical and legal bills stemming from the altercation.

Meanwhile, Aubry has dropped plans to make a temporary restraining order against Martinez permanent.

Gabriel Aubry’s Face Seriously Bruised Post-Altercation

It was less than a tranquil Thanksgiving day for actress Halle Berry after her ex Gabriel Aubry got into a fight with her fiancé Olivier Martinez outside of her Los Angeles home yesterday morning. The battle left Aubry injured and in handcuffs as police took the model into custody. According to the LAPD, they received a call just after 10 a.m., and arrived at Berry’s home to find two men “involved in a physical altercation.” The police say that Aubry was first taken to a local hospital to receive treatment and then was booked into the Metro Detention Center on battery charges.The fight apparently broke out when Aubry arrived at the house for a custody handoff to return daughter Nahla to her mother. Words led to bunches and both men ended up going to the hospital for treatment. Bail was set for Aubrey at $20,000. The extent of the men’s injuries has not been released.

It’s still not clear if authorities will pursue a criminal case against Halle Berry ex Gabriel Aubry.

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry have reached a truce over the violent turkey-day tussle at the Oscar winner’s mansion.

“The parties have reached an amicable agreement. There will be no further statements regarding this matter,” Berry lawyer Blair Berk told the Daily News Thursday.

She said the cease-fire statement was joined by Aubry’s criminal lawyer Shawn Holley.

Both sides were in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday to discuss the settlement with the family court judge overseeing the paternity case for Berry’s 4-year-old daughter with Aubry.

It’s still not clear if authorities will pursue a criminal case against Aubry.

He was taken into custody Thanksgiving morning on suspicion of misdemeanor battery after a fight with Berry’s fiancé Olivier Martinez.

Police said Berry called cops to report someone assaulting her boyfriend and that Martinez made a citizen’s arrest of Aubry.

A law enforcement source said Martinez claimed Aubry started the brawl by shoving him and throwing a punch at his face that missed and hit his shoulder.

Aubry, a Calvin Klein model, later claimed Martinez violently attacked him without provocation and threatened to kill him.

Multiple sources told the Daily News it’s highly probably the case will disappear because Aubry has no history of violent crime and barely touched Martinez.

Instead, Aubry ended up with a broken rib and a smashed face with one eye swollen shut and a deep cut that required stitches.

Gabriel Aubry Gets Into Physical Altercation With Olivier Martinez :

Gabriel Aubry and Olivier Martinez wanted to prove who’s the man in a recent altercation. The incident took place at Halle Berry‘s home on Thursday, November. Thanksgiving, that is!According to TMZ, the fight began when Aubry showed up for a custodial handoff to Berry. Martinez told Aubrey they have to move on, but the model pushed the actor and threw a punch at him. They got physical, with Martinez managing to pin Aubry to the ground.

Following the fight, Aubry sustained a broken rib, contusions on his face and a possible head injury. The incident got so ugly, Martinez may have broken his hand and suffered neck injuries.

The police were called and “the investigation is ongoing”. So far, “the cause of the fight between the two men is unknown”. At least there’s not official word on the causes.
Us Weekly reports “no one has been booked yet. One man was transported with unknown injuries to a local hospital. I do not know the extent of the injuries or if he remains in the hospital”. They were referring to Gabriel Aubry.
According to Radar Online, Martinez, Aubry and Berry were cordial during a pre-holiday party November 21.
Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry split in April 2010 after dating for five years. They have a 4-year-old daughter Nahla. After the split, Berry and Aubry got involved into a nasty custody battle.
